FATHER GERARD ROULEAU JOUBERT, O.P.
Born: Joseph Francis Rouleau Joubert on August 2, 1911, Momence, Illinois died January 17, 2004, Houston, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Christine Rouleau Joubert, brothers, Louis Gabriel “Bill” Joubert and Louis Joseph Joubert, sisters, Rose Heloise, Mary Louise "Bees" Joubert, Alice "Dit" Langford and Emily Carlin. He is survived by a sister, Sr. Gerarda Marie Joubert SHNJM, Los Gatos, California; 8 nieces, 3 nephews, 19 great-nephews and 14 great-nieces. Fr. Joubert entered the Dominican Order in 1932 as a member of the Province of St. Joseph. His philosophy and theology studies were done at the Dominican House of Studies in River Forest, Illinois, St. Joseph's Priory in Somerset, Ohio and at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C. He and forty-two classmates were ordained to the priesthood on June 16, 1938. The one remaining member of that class, Fr. John Carrigan, lives in Washington, D.C. After ordination, Father Joubert studied at the Catholic University of America where he received an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Philosophy. His career as a professor of Philosophy began in 1941 and continued until 1970 with assignments at the Dominican House of Studies, Catholic University, DePaul University, Rosary College, Loras College, Wichita State University and St. Albert's College. During that period, Fr. Joubert also served the Dominicans as Prior and Superior of communities in River Forest, Illinois and in Houston. Additionally, he was Campus Minister and Chaplain at Rice University and the Texas Medical Center; Campus Minister and Chaplain at Wichita State University; and Chaplain for the Knights of Columbus Council #803 in Houston. In 1970, Fr. Joubert became the Pastor of Holy Rosary Parish in Midtown, Houston where he faithfully served until his retirement in 1986. He then spent 8 months in Lourdes, France where he wrote and published Lord Teach us to Pray in 1988 and Merci Beaucoup in 1998. Fr. Joubert is highly esteemed by many Houstonians and will be greatly missed.
In Lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the Southern Dominican Province, Holy Rosary Church, 3600 Travis Street; Houston, Texas 77002. These gifts will be used for the education of Dominican Seminarians.
